Artist Statement
My paintings are neither literal nor abstract; they are representations of experiences condensed into imagery. The passion that inspires my work comes from my love to explore and observe nature and the landscape around me. It is not just the picturesque landscape that grabs my attention but also that of a simple weed growing in a crack of a sidewalk. I find myself contemplating and revering the power and beauty of nature day after day. It is this awe that fuels the sacred spaces of my paintings. Capturing moments in time, not only a place but also the feeling of being in that space. The images are real and fictitious, stripped down to their simplistic forms, creating worlds of their own. The mystery evoked in these worlds provides a personal journey for the viewer, eliciting a different story in each of us.
My background in textile design has inspired the patterns intertwined with this imagery. Lately, these patterns have taken on a larger role and involve more layering. With hand carved block prints I am creating a setting for the ground and earth rooting these botanicals. It is their home and individual space that I am capturing, their life and soul. We are all drawn to the surface of things in life, but when given a closer view, a deeper and more interesting knowledge can be found. Surface is an essential element in my paintings, and the process consists of multiple layers of color and texture that I am able to work back into. This reveals the many layers underneath, and exposes the history of the landscapes, providing a more reflective encounter.
